Priya, our Learner of the Month for March, began her journey into childcare with no prior experience, starting as a Dinner Supervisor at a Nursery in London. It was during these early moments, serving meals and spending time with the children, that she discovered a genuine passion for supporting their happiness and development. Inspired by the joy and unpredictability of working with children, and encouraged by her manager, Priya decided to progress onto the Level 3 Diploma for the Children’s Workforce.

Since enrolling, Priya has developed a strong foundation of knowledge and practical skills, building her confidence in areas such as communication, safeguarding, behaviour management and supporting children’s wellbeing. Her growing understanding has enabled her to take on greater responsibility within her setting, from creating child-led activities to building meaningful relationships with both children and parents.

We recently caught up with Priya as she received her award to reflect on her journey and experiences so far.

What inspired you to choose the Level 3 Diploma for the Children’s Workforce?
“Working with children is so rewarding, and no two days at the nursery are ever the same. I had no prior experience in childcare before starting as a Dinner Supervisor at Little Angels Nursery, but I quickly realised how much I enjoyed spending time with the children. Sitting with them during meals and seeing them happy genuinely made me happy too. I knew I wanted to progress further in this field, so I spoke to my manager and director, who encouraged and supported me to enrol onto the Level 3 Diploma.”

How has the course helped you develop your skills and confidence when working with children?
“The course has helped me develop essential skills and knowledge to support children effectively in my setting. I’ve gained a deeper understanding of areas such as wellbeing, communication, building positive relationships, health and safety, behaviour management and attachment. As a result, my confidence in my role has grown, as I now feel more knowledgeable and capable in supporting children’s development.”

What has been the most interesting or valuable thing you’ve learned during the course so far?
“One of the most interesting areas I’ve learned about is specialised support roles, such as the SENCO, and how different agencies work together to support children with additional needs. I have also found learning about behaviour management very valuable. In addition, gaining a clear understanding of safeguarding and welfare, including the legal responsibilities to protect children from harm, has been extremely important.”

How has studying this qualification helped you in your day to day role within your setting?
“This qualification has supported me in many aspects of my day to day role. I am now more confident in planning child led activities, building positive relationships with parents and understanding children’s behaviour. I have a stronger awareness of safeguarding procedures and feel more confident in my responsibilities as a key person, including building strong bonds with the children. Overall, it has helped me carry out my role with greater confidence, knowledge and care.”

We also spoke with Priya’s manager to gain insight into the impact of her training within the setting.

What benefit has the Learner of the Month’s training had on your business or workplace?
“Priya has developed a strong understanding of key procedures, guidance and legislation within the setting. She has become a valuable member of the team and is able to support her colleagues with her growing knowledge and skills.”

What benefit has the training had on the Learner of the Month’s confidence and motivation?
“Priya’s confidence has continued to grow throughout her learning journey, and her motivation to develop further has been clear. She is proactive in asking questions, seeking out information and continuously improving her practice.”

What has been the impact of the training on your customers, service users or parents?
“Priya is now a more knowledgeable and confident practitioner, which has had a positive impact on the quality of care and support provided within the setting.”

Would you like to say anything about the training provider, PTS, that you would be happy for us to quote?
“At the start of the programme, there were some changes which understandably impacted Priya’s confidence. However, once consistent tutor support was established, Priya made excellent progress. The support she received helped rebuild her confidence and develop her self belief, ultimately enabling her to successfully achieve her qualification.”
