Level 4 Professional Accounting Technician

Course Synopsis

The Level 4 Professional Accounting Technician apprenticeship is for people already working in an accounting or finance role who are ready for more responsibility. You’ll create, verify and review accurate, timely financial information, support budgeting and forecasting, and communicate financial information to colleagues, clients and stakeholders, in accountancy practices, finance departments and organisations across a wide range of sectors. It typically takes 18 months.

Prepare, analyse and interpret financial information to produce accurate, timely accounting information.
Support budgeting, forecasting and financial planning using accounting and digital systems effectively.
Identify discrepancies and risks in financial information, and maintain accurate records and audit trails.
Apply legislation, regulation and professional standards, with ethics, integrity and confidentiality in every task.
Communicate complex financial information clearly, and build effective relationships with colleagues, clients and stakeholders.

How It Works

You learn while you work, combining structured learning with practical experience in your accounting or finance role so you apply new knowledge straight away. The apprenticeship typically takes 18 months, followed by an end point assessment period. Our experienced tutors support you throughout, and additional learning support and reasonable adjustments are available if you need them. Once your employer is satisfied you’re competent, an independent end point assessment tests your technical knowledge, professional judgement and communication in realistic accounting situations.

The apprenticeship is suitable for individuals already working in finance, accounting, or taxation roles who want to develop specialist technical expertise and progress their career within the profession. It is ideal for those working towards chartered status.

The apprenticeship typically takes around 24 months to complete. Apprentices remain employed throughout, receive support from a dedicated PTS tutor, and combine workplace learning, professional study, and off the job training during paid working hours.

Apprentices never pay for their training. For non-levy employers, the employer contribution is typically £750 plus VAT, with the government funding the remaining cost of the programme.

The apprenticeship leads to senior accounting, finance, and taxation roles with significantly higher earning potential and professional recognition. It also provides a strong progression route towards chartered qualifications and leadership opportunities within the finance profession.
