The Level 3 Senior Healthcare Support Worker apprenticeship is for people with some healthcare experience who help registered practitioners deliver healthcare services. You’ll carry out clinical and non clinical healthcare or therapeutic tasks, provide high quality, compassionate care, and act within the limits of your competence. You’ll be accountable for your own work, act as a role model and may guide less experienced colleagues.
You learn while you work, building your skills in a healthcare setting under the supervision of registered practitioners. Your training follows the national apprenticeship standard published by Skills England, which sets out the knowledge, skills and behaviours you’ll need to show. To finish, you’ll complete an end point assessment made up of a multiple choice test, an observation of practice and a professional discussion, and your performance decides your overall grade. If you don’t yet have Level 2 English and maths, you’ll achieve them before your end point assessment.

The Level 3 Senior Healthcare Support Worker Apprenticeship is a nationally recognised work based programme for experienced healthcare support workers ready to take on greater responsibility. Topics include person centred care, safeguarding, duty of care, infection prevention, health and safety, communication, and quality improvement.
The apprenticeship can be completed across a wide range of settings including hospitals, NHS Trusts, GP surgeries, mental health services, community healthcare, hospices, nursing homes, schools, prisons, and charity organisations. Learners must be employed in a suitable healthcare role supported by their employer throughout.
The apprenticeship typically takes around 18 months to complete, depending on experience and progress. Apprentices remain employed throughout, receive support from a dedicated PTS tutor, and complete off the job training during paid working hours.
You must be employed in a suitable healthcare role where you can demonstrate increasing levels of responsibility and competence. Functional Skills support in maths and English can be provided where needed, and Deaf apprentices whose primary language is BSL may use an approved BSL qualification as an alternative to the English requirement.
The apprenticeship leads to senior healthcare support roles, Assistant Practitioner positions, and Nursing Associate roles. Subject to meeting entry requirements, it can also provide a pathway into higher education and professional registration routes including nursing and other registered healthcare professions.
