Level 2 Certificate in the Principles of Dementia Care

Course Overview

The knowledge and skills needed to provide dementia care has never been more necessary than it is now. This qualification will help you understand what the condition entails, as well teach how best to support those who are affected by it.

The course covers essential topics such as positive communication techniques and person-centred approaches that take into account an individual’s needs at every stage of their journey through this difficult time in life. Learn how you can best help them in their time of need with professional yet personable attention during the illness phase too when they may be experiencing symptoms like confusion due forgetting things previously known just yesterday.

Awarding Body: TQUK (E-certificates upon achievement)

Learning Method(s): Online and paper materials, online and paper assessment

There is no prior qualification needed to access this course.

This course is part of our fully funded range of Level 2 courses so is free to the majority of learners – eligibility criteria applies.

Course Content

Unit 1: Dementia awareness
This unit covers precisely what dementia is, the most common types of dementia and the causal factors associated with them. Also explored is how others can have a positive impact on an individual with dementia through a variety of different techniques.

Unit 2: Person-centred approach to the care and support of individuals with dementia
Build the knowledge and understanding required to enable an individual with dementia to experience a sense of security and well-being. The vital role of carers in such a scenario is also covered.

Unit 3: Understand the factors that can influence communication and interaction with individuals who have dementia
This unit will raise awareness of the different communication needs and limitations of individuals with dementia in order to encourage positive interaction.

Unit 4: Understand equality, diversity and inclusion in dementia care
An introduction to equality, diversity and inclusion as ideas to aspire to, which are also all important when practising the person-centred care approach.

Unit 5: Understand the administration of medication to individuals with dementia using a person-centred approach
This unit helps understand the range of cutting edge medications available to, and appropriate for, individuals with dementia, exploring specific needs that individuals may have when receiving medication.

Unit 6: Understand behaviour in the context of dementia
This unit looks at the different behaviours individuals display once diagnosed with dementia and how to respond to particular types of behaviour.

Unit 7: Understand the benefits of engaging in activities in social care
Explore how engaging in social activities in order to enhance mental, physical and social well-being can be of amazing benefit to individuals with dementia.

Eligibility Criteria

This is a guide to the eligibility criteria if you are not sure about anything please get in touch with us.

  • If employed, you may still be eligible for funding if you earn less than £28,860 per year outside of London or less than £14.80 per hour in London. Proof of wage will be required prior to enrolment.
  • Learners must be aged 19+ by 31st Aug 2025
  • Learners must be have the right to work and live in the UK for the length of the course.
  • There are no entry requirements to undertake a distance learning course, however a good level of English is required.
  • Learners can be unemployed however Level 2 Mental Health in Early Years and Level 2 Adverse Childhood Experiences must be done in the workplace.
