Level 2 Certificate in the Principles of the Prevention and Control of Infection in Health Care Settings

Course Overview

This qualification aims to prepare you for tackling the outbreak of infection in hospitals and healthcare settings and how to control infections by aiding you in understanding the many causes of infection and how it can be spread, as well as how you can help control it.

Following the COVID19 outbreak, prevention and control measures through good practice are more key than ever before. This course will look at infection prevention and control in health and social care, the causes and spread of infection and the infection control procedures in health care.

Key Information

Course Length: 16 weeks on average

Awarding Body: TQUK (E-certificates upon achievement)

Learning Method(s): Online and paper based materials and assessments

There is no prior qualification needed to access this course.

This course is part of our fully funded range of Level 2 courses so is free to the majority of learners – eligibility criteria applies.

Course Content

Unit 1: Principles of the causes and spread of infection in healthcare settings
Learn about the chain of infection and examine how infection is caused and the ways in which it can spread.

Unit 2: Principles of the importance of personal hygiene and health in the prevention and control of infection in healthcare settings
Discover the vital importance of personal hygiene, demonstrate effective hand washing and the principles of using personal protective equipment.

Unit 3: Principles of decontamination, cleaning and waste management in healthcare settings
This unit will provide an understanding of how important cleaning, decontamination, sterilisation and waste management is within the healthcare setting.

Unit 4: Principles of infection prevention and control in a healthcare setting
In this unit explore the purpose of infection control and look in detail at the regulations, policies, procedures, risk assessments and roles and responsibilities in relation to infection control.

Eligibility Criteria

This is a guide to the eligibility criteria if you are not sure about anything please get in touch with us.

  • If employed, you may still be eligible for funding if you earn less than £28,860 per year outside of London or £14.80 per hour in London. Proof of wage will be required prior to enrolment.
  • Learners must be aged 19+ by 31st Aug 2025
  • Learners must be have the right to work and live in the UK for the length of the course.
  • There are no entry requirements to undertake a distance learning course, however a good level of English is required.
  • Learners can be unemployed however Level 2 Mental Health in Early Years and Level 2 Adverse Childhood Experiences must be done in the workplace.
