Employability training to help local mental health charity, Oakleaf.
Written on 6th, October 2021
Coinciding with World Mental Health Day, this month sees our partnership with Oakleaf, a local mental health charity based in Guildford, launch as we start delivery of an employability programme aimed at supporting individuals back into work and society.
What is World Mental Health Day?
World Mental Health Day celebrated annually on October 10th, is a day aimed at raising awareness of mental health issues. Around the world, mental health advocacy groups campaign for better education, treatment, and destigmatisation of mental health issues.
In 2021, the theme for World Mental Health Day is “Mental Health in an Unequal World.” The theme is aimed at recognising global inequalities contributing to poor mental health and the unique impact of the pandemic on mental health issues.
Why is Mental Health so Important?
- As many as 1 in 6 adults – and 1 in 5 children and adolescents – experience mental health problems.
- An estimated 10% of the population suffers from anxiety and depression, which are the most common mental health issues.
- Depression is one of the leading causes of disability, affecting 264 million people worldwide.
The charity’s Pathways to Work project, funded by the National Lottery, will host fortnightly courses delivered by our professional trainers to provide work-related training via face-to-face and online sessions – the first session is due at the end of October. Learners will also be signposted to other training courses through Professional Training Solutions, including Health and Social care and customer service depending on their choice and preferences.
Annalise Baker, Client Services Manager of Oakleaf, commented: “Oakleaf exists to improve the lives of people managing mental ill-health in Surrey, and to reduce social isolation by actively engaging and supporting individuals. The pandemic has been a challenging time for many, and we hope that this programme with Professional Training Solutions will help to increase confidence, independence, teaching new skills and obtaining new qualifications.”
Jackie Denyer, MD and founder of Professional Training Solutions, added: “Promoting awareness and reducing stigma is key when it comes to mental health services, and we’re really pleased to be supporting Oakleaf in this amazing project as we support individuals gaining vital skills and qualifications. Work-related training is a core skill, and we will work with employers to offer work experience, placements and jobs.”
