Maths functional skills are an alternative to GCSEs that most people take at school. Widely accepted by employers, colleges, and Universities as a GCSE equivalent, aims to teach mathematical knowledge and skills necessary in daily life and the workplace. The Level 2 is equal to GCSE Grade 4/C and above. The exam consists of two papers, a calculator and a non-calculator, taken together. Scores for both papers are added together to provide an overall total.
It covers the maths you will need in the workplace, will open up opportunities and pathways so you can progress your career and move on to further and higher education, or offer you entrance to an apprenticeship exempt from having to do further skills (upon achieving Level 2). Your initial assessment will identify which level you need to start from and we will work with you to achieve Level 2 (GCSE equivalent).
You undertake Initial Assessments and Diagnostics (online) before starting. This accurately identifies each learner’s levels and skills gaps in a 30-minute assessment. This enables us to start each learner on the right level and right programme – from Entry Level, through to Level 1 and then Level 2. Through our programmes you will be able to progress through the levels.
You will be given a choice of dates/times for your programme which will be eleven weekly sessions of 3 hours each. These will be online via Teams with a tutor, and you will receive an online invite. You will be expected to attend all of the workshops, a mock exam, and then an exam at the end. You will be offered one retake of the exam (along with revision classes) as part of the programme. No learner will be put through to exams until they have passed their mock exam.
Our programme will support learners with numeracy confidence, as well as supporting them with exam techniques and problem-solving skills.
Learners will be expected to complete and submit homework set by their tutor weekly and undertake revision and practice.
You will be offered online learning tools to complement our workshops.
The course is 11 weeks plus a mock plus the exam. Learners will sit exams either online, on paper, and proctored (i.e. with an invigilator online watching), at our exam centre in Farnham, or designated other exam centres locally. Exams will be graded a Pass or a Fail. There are no portfolio elements. Entry Level Maths exams are paper-based only and must be sat at our exam centres.
Anyone on our programme who has additional learning needs (eg Dyslexia/Dyscalculia ) will be supported by both our tutors and our dedicated SEND Coach. Adjustments will be agreed with the awarding body, which could include additional time or a reader.
