This qualification aims to prepare you for tackling the outbreak of infection in hospitals and healthcare settings and how to control infections by aiding you in understanding the many causes of infection and how it can be spread, as well as how you can help control it.
Following the COVID19 outbreak, prevention and control measures through good practice are more key than ever before. This course will look at infection prevention and control in health and social care, the causes and spread of infection and the infection control procedures in health care.

This course is part of our fully funded range of Level 2 courses so is free to the majority of learners – eligibility criteria applies.
Unit 1: Principles of the causes and spread of infection in healthcare settings
Learn about the chain of infection and examine how infection is caused and the ways in which it can spread.
Unit 2: Principles of the importance of personal hygiene and health in the prevention and control of infection in healthcare settings
Discover the vital importance of personal hygiene, demonstrate effective hand washing and the principles of using personal protective equipment.
Unit 3: Principles of decontamination, cleaning and waste management in healthcare settings
This unit will provide an understanding of how important cleaning, decontamination, sterilisation and waste management is within the healthcare setting.
Unit 4: Principles of infection prevention and control in a healthcare setting
In this unit explore the purpose of infection control and look in detail at the regulations, policies, procedures, risk assessments and roles and responsibilities in relation to infection control.

The Level 2 Certificate in the Prevention and Control of Infection in Health Care is a nationally recognised qualification covering the causes and spread of infection, personal hygiene and PPE, decontamination and waste management, and infection control regulations and procedures in healthcare settings. It is particularly relevant following the increased focus on infection prevention post Covid-19.
The course is suitable for care workers, healthcare assistants, clinical support staff, and anyone working in or looking to enter a health or social care setting where infection control is a key part of daily practice. No prior qualifications are required to enrol.
The course is fully funded through the Adult Skills Fund for eligible adults aged 19 and over living in London or Buckinghamshire. London residents must generally earn no more than £14.80 per hour, with eligibility outside London linked to earning under £28,860 per year. All funding is subject to residency and eligibility checks at enrolment.
The course is delivered through a flexible blended learning model using online and paper based materials, supported by a dedicated tutor throughout. Most learners complete the qualification within 16 weeks, with assessment through a portfolio of evidence and no formal examinations required.
The qualification supports progression into roles including Healthcare Assistant, Care Assistant, Support Worker, and Clinical Support Worker across NHS, hospital, residential, and community healthcare settings. Learners can also progress onto related funded Level 2 courses including Principles of Care Planning, Falls Prevention Awareness, and Principles of Dementia Care.
